Education for Arab-Jewish Coexistence

This case study manifests an approach for promoting Arab-Jewish coexistence through specific education. The approach is developed and implemented in Al-Qasemi Academic College of Education in Israel. The current situation in Jewish-Arab relations in Israeli society is characterized by growing inequality and alienation between Jews and Arabs. The challenges discussed were in developing and realizing an integrated approach to education for coexistence in Arab society through creating an organizational vision and a value confrontation leadership model. The approach serves as basis for development of the curriculum. The approach intends to include elements of education for coexistence into relevant course topics; use special curriculum in the department of Islamic Studies; implement teaching of joint courses for students of Al-Qasemi College and Jewish colleges; realize a teacher trainer educational program that promotes change of teacher trainers’ attitudes towards values needed for coexistence; and provide community-oriented education tied to current social issues. The actions taken to address the aforementioned challenges were: realizing an integrated approach to education for coexistence owing to implementing the organizational vision through the value confrontation leadership. Actions resulted in: the successful realization of an integrated approach to education for Arab-Jewish coexistence aimed at building a bridge between Islam and other cultures; the successful development of the organization owing to the value confrontation’s leadership; and a change in management culture empowering participants to cultivate liberal values.

Mohammad Essawi (Ph.D), Fulbright scholar, is currently president of Al Qasemi Academy, an Arab College of Education in Israel, and winner of the National Award of Quality and Excellence. Dr Essawi has developed Al Qasemi Academy from being a religious seminary into a nationally and internationally recognized academic institution in various fields. Dr. Essawi is an expert in organization and management development; he has established, in past years, a factory for chemicals and institute for organizational development; he is an organizational counselor and assessor authorized by the European Foundation of Quality Management (EFQM); he has co-chaired the public committee of Education for a shared life; and author of "Value Confrontation Approach to Management," an approach and practical model for change and development management in organizations. Major to Dr. Essawi's work are planning and managing Human Resource Development (HRD) processes, the development of a human society of knowledge, and a culture of dialogue, partnership and education for a shared life among cultures.
