An Analysis of Education Globalization and the Chinese Education Trade Imbalance: An International Student Flow and Service Trade Perspective

Globalization is an irreversible trend in economics. This paper hypothesizes that the highly segmented education market has also followed this trend and has started fast globalization, signaled by the increasing international student flow worldwide. Factors that facilitate this education globalization are analyzed. Retrospective data on student inflow to and outflow from China are studied from the service trade perspective. The interesting phenomenon of the inverse education service trade imbalance in China is outlined. Remediating measures based on the core competence theory for this imbalance are proposed. Outward looking projections are also presented.

Cao Dejun received his Ph.D in Business Administration in 2003 in China. He is interested in analysing business issues by means of Networking Theory. He has been teaching international business for over 10 years. He is a member of Academy of Management (AOM), Academy of International Business (AIB) as well as a member of executive board of Global Digital Business Society (GDBS) at IUP. Currently, he serves as Director of Foreign Affairs Office of SWUFE and is in charge of international exchange programs of the SWUFE.

Prof. John Zhang

Professor, Mathematics Department, Indiana University of Pennsylvania, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA

John Zhang is a statistician. He has graduate degrees in mathematics, computer sciences, statistics, and management. His current academic interests include statistics, business, and multidisciplinary issues intersecting sciences and business. He has been teaching at Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP) for over 13 years. He was the president of the Allegheny Mountain Section of Mathematics Association of America (MAA), one of the 27 MAA sections. He has also directed the Applied Research Lab for IUP for 5 year. He has provided consulting services for numerous business and government entities. His hobbies include traveling and wine.

Shixiang Zuo
